Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research comprising Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College under the aegis of Sri Devaraj Urs Educational Trust for Backward Classes, Kolar, is a Deemed to be University declared Under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification No.F.9-36/2006-U.3(A) Dt. 25th May 2007, MHRD, Government of India.
Currently, The Academy has Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Tamaka, Kolar as the constituent institution. The Academy office and the constituent institution are located at Tamaka village, Kolar and spread over almost 100 acres of lush green campus. This campus is 75km away from Bengaluru city as well as international Airport. The campus has several buildings to accommodate the administrative, teaching/training hospital and hostel facilities of The Academy as well as the Medical College with a total build up area of over 85,000 sqmts. The college conducts medical courses at both Under Graduate (MBBS), Post Graduate (MD, MS) and Post Graduate Diploma levels. It has also started doctoral programmes in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology and Fellowship programmes in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. The Academy has developed regulations, curricula/syllabi for MBBS, Postgraduate M.D/M.S and Postgraduate Diploma courses as prescribed by the Medical Council of India. All the courses offered are recognized by the Medical Council of India, New Delhi. The college is also recognized by the Malaysia Medical Council and since the academic year 2009-10, thirty five Malaysian students have been admitted to Undergraduate course.
The Academy has started the Department of Allied Health Sciences which conducts several graduate paramedical courses, the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics which offers Masters, M.Phil and Ph.D courses in Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics. To enhance the quality of teaching and to introduce and incorporate newer teaching methodologies, the Academy has established the Department of Medical Education. A centre for Clinical Skills and Simulations has been established to train the Medical graduates and postgraduates and other health care personnel.
Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, the constituent institution of the Academy maintains a high standard in teaching learning and evaluation processes and has become a byword for quality Medical Education. It provides the best facilities in a conducive atmosphere for the students to acquire requisite skills and competence.
R.L.Jalappa Hospital and Research Centre, the teaching hospital of the Medical College, provides quality secondary and tertiary health care facilities to the rural and urban population of Kolar district and bordering areas of the neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The Hospital is a boon to the victims of accidents on the highway as it has a well-equipped Emergency Medicine department, Central Diagnostic Laboratory, ICU, CCU, PICU, NICU, with imaging facilities viz CT, MRI and Blood Bank with component separation facilities.
Its mandate is to develop trained manpower of medical professionals to cater to the needs of the community and provide service to the needy rural population. The Academy also has set up an Outpatient Unit at Kolar town and conducts committed outreach service to the needy through free medical camps at taluka levels, as well as villages in remote areas.
The Academy provides all facilities for the faculty and students to conduct quality research activities. It has established linkages with institutions of excellence and Research and Development wings of industries. The Genomic and Central Research Facilities which are available in the Academy, cater to diagnostics and research aspects of genetic disorders. The centre consists of highly sophisticated equipments for cytogenetics and molecular diagnosis. This is one of the few medical institutions under self financing ‘Deemed to be University’ system, providing such facilities for diagnostics and research.
